Personal Development: How To Win Without Becoming Superior
One pitfall of becoming highly successful is how you view yourself.
When we allow ourselves to believe in the fallacy that it is okay to take our foot off the gas, that it is okay to somehow not treat everyone equally, that our opinion matters more than others. We then begin to fall down to Earth.
Our businesses stop performing our teams become unmotivated and our businesses stop performing as they should.
When we allow this to happen we then fail.
But how do we stop this from happening?
We need to stop acting superior.
Superior is when we think that we are better than others. We have a false belief that our achievements mean that we can treat people who we deem less than ourselves as less.
We stop valuing the opinion, we belittle them in meetings we become everything that we probably hated in our time.
We become our own enemies.
This stops becoming a win for us, and as mentioned above we start to lose. But how can we win without being superior?
We need to add balance.
There is a phrase which I love:
Treat the janitor the same way you would treat the CEO.
A lot can be said for how you treat your team below you, whether you become a leader of people and a champion of ideas.
Or you become a dictator who does not care for what anyone else has to say.
The issue with being a boss is no one will want to work for you.
Trust me I have had bosses who I have absolutely hated and leaders who I loved.
A leader says how are WE going to solve this. They step into the trenches with you. They look for other people to step up to the plate to create an amazing work environment.
A boss summons people to their offices they put the blame of failure on everyone else but themselves.
They lose touch with what their consumer wants at the same time.
Their ego takes over their bodies.
This is a sure-fire way of losing yourself and becoming superior.
This will not win you any fans. This will not get you anywhere that you are trying to go.
This is the killer. As when you first began you were the ideas person. When your team chipped in you were happy and you listened to their ideas with reverence.
You celebrated wins together because you knew you were not superior to them. You were simply a team.
How to win and not become superior well:
- Act like a leader
- Be a champion of ideas
- Take responsibility
- Lead from the front.
- Always be looking for the fun
When you are a leader your business can only grow.
When you are a boss your business can only shrink.
Superiority will blind you will make you feel invisible just like a drug.
But when that wears off of you, the reality is bleak and usually, it is too late to stop.
