Self-mastery is a skill that only the best seem to care about.

The most successful businessmen & women pay attention to the idea of self-mastery. But the average person does not.

Why is this?

Well, a simple reason for this is that self-mastery takes a lot of work and dedication to do. It is easy to dabble and wander through life trying one hundred different activities than to focus on one.

As Bruce Lee said:

I do not fear the man who knows ten thousand kicks but has practiced them once. I fear the man who has practiced one kick ten thousand times.

This applies to all aspects of life. After all, we have all heard of the expression:

It takes ten thousand hours to become an expert.

So how do we learn to practice self-mastery?

Dedication:

We have to become dedicated to one activity or one hobby. This is the scary part of self-mastery.

To put all of your eggs in one box and hope beyond hope that it all works out. We fear the failure that we will endure along the way. We look at how high up the mountain we need to go, and then we find whether the activity means enough to us to climb that mountain.

In most cases that fear of committing is enough to stop us in our tracks.

When fear stops us we move on to the next activity which catches our attention and our mind.

Obsession:

Most people hate the word obsession, it seems dirty to talk about.

It is portrayed in a very negative light. However, there is nothing wrong with obsession as long as it is constructive. Every day I obsess over the work I do. I obsess over how I am going to serve today.

I obsess over my clients and what they need.

This is all healthy. There is nothing wrong with this type of obsession.

High performers and successful people understand this. They are willing to become obsessed with this one activity to progress to becoming an expert in that field or area.

Time:

Self-mastery is all about time and secretly we all understand this. To master anything we have to find the time inside our busy lives to fit it in. To be able to attack it to be able to focus on it.

Which in today's world is difficult. When we come home from our office jobs we are too tired to think about doing anything that requires too much brainpower.

Instead, we shift our four to the TV because this requires less brainpower.

However, by doing this we never allow ourselves to advance as people.

We limited our growth we stop ourselves and chain ourselves to our current circumstances.

It is only by stopping once in a while and making a decision to spend our time doing something else that we end up doing something more productive with our time.

How Do You Start On Your Journey?

Simple!

You have to make the choice to become excellent. You have to decide right here right now that you demand that in X activity you are going to focus your spare time on it.

It is only by making a decision and then sticking to it that you can become a master at the skills you need to develop for your best future self.

Conclusion:

Self-mastery is possible for everyone. It is just that not everyone has the willpower, the fight, and the determination to see it all the way through.

If you want to become a master then you will need to learn self-mastery.

Until tomorrow this has been your coach Andrew.
