Becoming an expert requires very few qualifications. It requires instead an intense pursuit of subject knowledge.

Subject knowledge can be hard to come by, as it takes time and effort to acquire.

Becoming an expert is more than just knowing a lot of stuff on one topic. But it is the pursuit of becoming extremely knowledgeable in that topic.

To do this requires only a few skills but skills that most people can never truly master. If you can master these skills, and have the fortitude to stick it out through the tough times, then you to can become an expert.

Deep Work:

I have already touched upon this topic in more detail, in previous blogs, but for the sake of this blog post, we will be examing deep work in terms of becoming an expert.

To be an expert they say it takes ten thousand hours but in truth, I believe this to be ten thousand guided hours. What I mean by this is, it is very easy to sit at your computer and watch a Youtube video on your chosen subject.

However, it is another entirely different function to absorb that information up into something useful.

Watching a video while flicking through social media, will not give you the results that you necessarily want. But going deep on the subject for eight hours a week will lead to the results that you want.

Therefore, to become an expert you have to be ready to give up your social media for a time period, be willing to not become distracted, and then continue to learn.

It is when we work deep that we allow the information to enter our consciousness more easily and rapidly.

Becoming an expert means that you will have to understand the nuances of your field this can be extremely difficult to do when there is a distraction.

Deep work can help stop you from this distraction.

Eight hours of deep work, where you lock yourself into a room, read a book, have no social media will over a year accomplish more than twenty hours a week of distracted learning.

Becoming used to deep work is a necessity in the game of becoming an expert.

Obsession:

You will have to become obsessed with your chosen topic. It must enthuse you and make you want to delve into the deepest depths of the area.

Without this obsession, you will struggle to be able to stay in the relevant growth mindset that you need in order to become an expert.

Experts speak extemporaneously as they know their field inside out. That only happens when you can become obsessed with the topic.

When learning is no longer learning but has become a fun and must-do activity.

Reading:

If you hate reading, you will struggle to become an expert. Reading is hugely important as it allows you to get more depth and breadth of your field.

Most experts will write books, or research papers on their chosen topic, or like me will blog. Reading will become a staple of your life when you decide to become an expert, and because of this, I would strongly recommend that you start to read.

Learning:

Thankfully in today’s technological web 3.0 age, learning for the most part can be free. Youtube, Instagram, TikTok, Google, can give you a plethora of material that costs nothing to use.

Due to this, it is easy to become an expert on your topic, easier than it was just twenty years ago.

Fake Expert:

Fake experts are all around the idea of faking it until you make it has really taken off over the last three to four years, with coaches popping up all the time. You will need to think of ways to differentiate yourself from the competition.

This could be through the value you provide (for free on places like Instagram) or this could be through the certificates that you have. (The first being quicker to achieve than the latter.)

Conclusion:

Anyone can become an expert these days, it is all about becoming an authority and presenting your ideas in a way that inspires confidence in your reader.

How you do this is up to you. But it will take time. It will take more time than you really think.

If you can stick out the course then the rewards can be amazing!

Until tomorrow this is your coach Andrew
