What is it to be a role model? We see so many people who are classed as influencers, and we follow them, look at what they are wearing, what they are saying, what they are selling, and we buy.

But that does not necessarily make them good role models.

So how do you become a good role model?

Choices:

To be a role model you must make a choice.

You have to decide to make a change to how you go about your life, both personally and in business.

You have to set standards that you are going to live up to and you are going to expect those who follow you to live up to.

This comes with the challenging role of challenging people when they do not live up to your standards.

Your Internal Standards:

It is important that you decide on a set of standards to follow and live by. These could be as simple as not lying, or they could be more complex as to always say no to a certain type of customer, or to hang up the phone on rude customers, even if it costs business.

Whatever you decide you have to set them. You also have to act in a certain way. Your internal standards have to show the following:

  • Integrity
  • Self Control
  • Morality

You have to be prepared to become better than what you are now, but also to hold others to the same standards.

Other People:

It becomes very easy to drop your standards to appease others when they are not living up to what you expect, especially in work and especially if you are not the boss, however, it is the classical parable of not following the sheep.

When others fail in living up to your standards, when they fail at being better people, growing further, advancing themselves then you have to be prepared to call them out and challenge them.

Challenging People:

Now there is a right and a wrong way to challenge people.

You can be constructive or destructive and ruin a relationship/friendship.

Constructive is asking the person to rethink their thought process, or guiding them to see the problem in a different light.

An example of this is,

How about we look at X this way instead?

Or

How do you think X feels about this conflict?

By giving others the chance to rethink their viewpoints sometimes they will come around to your way of thinking and will allow you to lead the way becoming a role model to others.

Being destructive is telling people that they are wrong.

You can never win an argument. One person walks away feeling like they won the other just feels resentment for having their subjective worldview questioned.

The only way to win an argument is to not argue.

Being a role model is about becoming better than you already are and then getting people to grow and raise their games too.

You become influential that way, you have more power that way. That is how you win the influencer game.

Until next time this has been your coach Andrew
